Cohort II STRETCH loggerhead Locations as of the last two days.

The STRETCH attachment team is assembling in Nagoya, Japan at the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium.  We will work to attach the satellite tags to the 28 juvenile loggerhead turtles on June 21, 22, 23 and 24.  Please take a look at this attachment video to see what we are going to be doing to safely and harmlessly attach the tags.
The turtles with tags are scheduled to be loaded aboard the Neptune Ace on June 26 after which the ship will make stops at Yokohama and Tokyo before heading across the Pacific!
Co-PI Dana Briscoe found the SST for the release locations last year and this year and the probable SST at this years time of release.
Last year's release location was: 39.56N, 148.5W. The current SSTs at this location are: 21.9 degrees C.

On the same date last year, SSTs were: 21.6 degrees C.

By the release date, 07-07-2024, temperatures had cooled to a perfect 18 degrees C.

As we make our way across the Pacific to Nagoya Japan, our three Splash 10 tagged juvenile loggerheads are hanging out off the coast of Baja California Sur in waters that are right around 19 degrees C.  The Overlay shows that the temp is pretty uniformly in that range where most of the loggerheads are located off of Baja.

Moana Kai, Ehnally and Pericu are off of Baja California in Pelagic waters that are 2000 to 3000 meters deep.

STRETCH team members Laura Jim and Marc Rice have embarked for Nagoya Japan to attach the next group of satellite tags to Cohort III juvenile loggerhead turtles.  Stay tuned for more information beginning on June 20 about the attachment process and the research team.

While Cohort II is still transmitting accurate locations, the STRETCH team is getting ready to travel to Nagoya, Japan to put satellite tags on 28 more Cohort III juvenile loggerhead turtles.  These turtles are progeny hatched on Kochi Beach and raised by the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium STRETCH team member Masanori Mori.  We will be working to attach the tags on June 21-24 so that they are ready to put on board of the Neptune Ace RoRo ship on June 26.  The Neptune Ace will transport the Cohort III turtles to a release point that will, hopefully, very near where Cohorts I and II were released.
It is very likely that we will have a significant number of Cohort II turtles transmitting at the same time Cohort III turtles are released and begin transmitting.  It will make for an exciting time trying to keep track of all those wonderful juvenile loggerheads at one time..!!
