After looking at the diving behavior of Seiran, Ai and Sora (below) I decided to see how their diving behavior matched up with those of Moana Kai and Pericu of Cohort II.  Moana Kai and Pericu are now much further to the south east that are Cohort III turtles and it seems that their diving behavior shows a more pronounced diel pattern with more more than 50 % of their time spent from 5 to 20 meters depth during the night while during the day they are both spending 86 to 88 % of their time at the surface.

Diving Behavior of CIII turtles Seiran, Ai and Sora. For Seiran and Sora there appears to be a distinct diel variation in diving behavior with more dives being made to the depth of 15 to 20 meters during the night time hours.  Seiran spent more that 40% of its time at 15-20 meters depth and Sora spent more that 70% of its time at the 15-20 meter depth. Ai, on the other hand, seemed to spend a significant amount of time at 15-20 meters throughout the day.  
The explanation of what these turtles are doing during these dives remains a mystery.

    Map: Cohort II Current Locations   Map: Cohort III Current Locations Fifth Annual Hawaii Pacific University Turtle Workshop STRETCH RESOURCES AND INFORMATION Questions????:  email - mrice@hpa.edu October 30, 2025 DIVING CHARACTERISTICS Moana Kai and Pericu (Cohort II loggerheads with Splash 10 diving data tags) have been in pelagic waters off of BCP for nearly 8 months now and I thought it might be interesting to look at their diving patterns during that time.  As the graph below shows, Moana Kai spends about 88% of its time on the surface from 0401to1600 hours (daytime) compared with only 30% during the nighttime hours, spending nearly 69 % of the time during the night  at between 5 and 20 meters depth.  Pericu's dive patterns are similar in that it spends 86% of its time on the surface during the day and 30% during the night.  During the night, it spends 54% of its time at depths between 5-20 meters.
